Announcing the Publication of a New Historical Mystery Novel
Tommy Stern has never gotten over the suicide of his best friend, Ben Lowe, who in the summer of 1951 is found hanging from a tree in the woods behind their high school in Huntsville, Alabama. A year earlier, Huntsville becomes home to 118 former Nazi scientists and engineers who have been brought to the United States through a secret government-sponsored project called Operation Paperclip to work on the space program. Past evidence of war crimes does not disqualify these men from entering the United States.
Eighteen years later, the discovery of a journal is the catalyst that encourages Tommy to reexamine the facts that led to his friend’s death. Ben is Jewish and a survivor of the Holocaust. The journal leads Tommy to believe that there is a connection between Ben’s untimely and horrific final moments and the arrival of the Germans.
Tommy’s search for the truth leads him back to Huntsville where he rekindles a relationship with his high school girlfriend Karin Angel, the daughter of one of the German scientists. Karin and Tommy join forces to discover the dark secrets of Operation Paperclip and the truth behind what happened to Ben.
Sandy Berman is the award-winning author of Whitewashed and Klara with a K. Sandy is also the founding archivist of the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta, where she established the largest repository of Jewish historical research in the Southeast. As the archivist, Sandy spent years traveling to small towns throughout the South documenting Jewish life. This rich tapestry of experiences is woven into her works of fiction.
Sandy Berman’s Whitewashed is about Operation Paperclip, set in the small town of Huntsville, Alabama. Although I have read many books about this time period, I had not heard of Operation Paperclip, a federal program that brought Nazi scientists to the U.S. after WWII to work on the space program. I was hooked in immediately. The author did a wonderful job of developing the characters. You’ll love how Tommy and Ben become such good friends, and Tommy’s search for the truth behind his friend’s death. The story felt real and the theme of the book was truly eye-opening. I highly recommend Whitewashed to anyone who wants a page-turner as well as to learn how Huntsville, Alabama became the “Rocket City”.
Thanks for the feedback Anne and I’m really glad to hear how much you enjoyed the read.
